HCAM 2009 Annual Meeting Recap

Members of HCAM gathered in Alexandria Sept. 17, 2009 for our 63rd annual conference. A total of 242 attendees representing 59 facilities took part, and 72 of the participants were first-time attendees.

Keynote speaker Cindy Bigger opened “HCAM Express … Full Steam Ahead” with a presentation about the “colors matrix” personality type indicator. Attendees identified their personality preferences, which help explain why they do things one way and others the opposite.

Other speakers included Dr. Gretchen Phillips, member of the family medicine practice at Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming, who spoke about various current health care trends; and Brenda Larson, wellness director at Knute Nelson in Alexandria, who “shared her inspirational life journey and the real-life angels she has encountered,” said Sharon Mortrud, HCAM outgoing president. Break-out sessions covered fundraising, marketing, networking, relationship building, communication, decisionmaking and teamwork.

In addition, the membership authorized the creation of a new award in 2010 — the Heart of Minnesota Award for Volunteer of the Year.

Lastly, the following officers for 2010 were installed:

  • Betty Hestekin of Fairview Lakes, Wyoming — president;
  • Phil Ruggiero of St. Cloud Hospital — treasurer;
  • Jo Torfin of North Country Health Services, Bemidji — assistant treasurer; and
  • Prudy Knaak of Rochester Methodist — president-elect.

The next two HCAM Annual Meetings will be at the same location — Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center. The 2010 annual conference will be Sept. 15-17.

“HCAM would like to thank its member facilities for encouraging their auxilians and volunteers to attend this opportunity to learn, share and grow,” said Kylene Lehmann, HCAM vice president of the annual/meeting and conference.
